on hard work

Hard work is like a load placed before us, challenging us to shoulder it. Some loads are light, some heavy. Some people prefer the light ot the heavy; they pick the light and shove the heavy onto others. That is not a good attitude. Some engineers are diffrent; they leave ease and comfort to others and take the heavy loads themselves; they are the first to hear hardships, the last to enjoy comforts. They are good engineers. We should all learn from their engineering spirit.

(engineers = comrades; engineering = communist)

on peace and open source

Our company and all the other open-source companies want peace; so do the peoples of all the countries of the world. The only ones who crave war and do not want peace are certain monopoly capitalist groups in a handful of imperialist companies which depend on agression for their profit.

- Mao

(company = country, open-source = socialist)

On personal attacks within the engineering team

Inner-Team criticism is a weapon for strengthening the Team organization and increasing its engineering capacity. In the Team organization of MT, however, criticism is not always of this character, and sometimes turns into personal ttacks. As a result, it damages the team organization as well as individuals. This is a manifestation of petty bourgeois individualism. The method of correction is to help Team members understand that the purpose of criticism is to increase the Team's engineering capacity in order to achieve victory in the class struggle and that it should not be used as a means of personal attack.

- Mao

(Team = Party, engineering = fighting, MT = Red Army)

Lesson #1: On solving bugs

You can't solve a bug? Well, get down and investigate the present facts and its past history! When you have investigated the bug thoroughly, you will know how to solve the bug. Conclusions invariably come after investigation, and not before. Only a blockhead cudgels his brains on his own, or together with a group, to "find a solution" or "evolve an idea" without making any investigation. It must be stressed that this cannot possibly lead to an effective solution or a good idea.

 - Mao

(bug = problem)
